Detecting Substructures in Protoplanetary Discs with MICADO/MORFEO

Description
Thanks to ALMA and SPHERE, we now have astonishing images of protoplanetary discs showing many substructures. However, most targeted objects are the wider and brightest ones, while fainter and more compact discs remain elusive.
Open questions include understanding the mechanisms behind these substructures and detecting the inner regions and faint objects. These can be addressed with ELT and its first-light imager MICADO/MORFEO, which, with its improved resolution and sensitivity, will allow detection of substructures in all bands and resolution of features that are currently too compact, too close to the star, or too faint.
In this talk, I will present results from an end-to-end pipeline developed within the JEDIEX collaboration to generate synthetic MICADO/MORFEO observations of substructures in protoplanetary discs. Our post-processing includes a PSF with a temporal coronagraphic sequence, producing reliable synthetic data for modeling future ELT observations.
We tested detection limits across a grid of models with varying gap widths and depths, stellar luminosities, and observational filters, and defined a metric to assess substructure observability. We then applied our pipeline to hydrodynamical simulations to predict how real objects will appear with MICADO/MORFEO.
These models will be key to identifying targets where hidden substructures could be revealed and to exploring less-studied objects.
