Description

In the recent years, Syria has witnessed a great renaissance in the construction sector and investment in it, accompanied by modifications in the construction control and allowing an increase in the number of floors of existing buildings. These additions are not taking into account the sufficient additional capacity to withstand vertical loads without noticing the accompanying structural damages caused by side loads such as possible earthquakes. Their occurrence during the life of the structure, which causes various damages as a result of the change in the seismic behavior of the elements of these buildings.                               This research deals with the study of the effect of adding floors to existing buildings without evaluating their efficiency on seismic loads, by studying two existing reinforced concrete buildings, one of them is a regular building and the other is irregular, horizontally and vertically, as they represent the most common model for existing facilities in Syria.

A seismic study was carried out using linear static and dynamic seismic analysis methods using the ETABS program, and the resulting responses were compared (floor shear forces, period, floor transitions, relative floor displacements). Then the performance and behavior of the buildings were evaluated after adding two and three floors under the influence of seismic loads by conducting anonlinear static analysis.

One of the most important findings of the research is that the two studied models  were  approached the level of life safety after adding two and three floors at high rates, and considering that the elements in the two models became unrealized, especially the columns, these additions are considered unrealized performance for designed shakes (design demand

 spectrum).

Therefore, the study recommends not adding floors to existing buildings except after conducting a comprehensive study of the buildings’ response to vertical and horizontal forces and verifying their performance after these additions to achieve the level of life safety for design demand spectrum and the level of collapse prevention for major tremors
