D1.3 Protein Engineering Proceeding

The Summer School on Protein Engineering 2025 was held from September 1st to September 5th, 2025, at the Center for Interdisciplinary Biosciences (CIB), Technology and Innovation Park of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice (TIP-UPJŠ). The event was designed for undergraduate students in their 2nd and 3rd year of study and welcomed 11 selected participants from Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice and Palacký University in Olomouc.
The program combined specialized lectures with hands-on laboratory sessions focused on recombinant DNA manipulation, protein expression in Escherichia coli, and protein purification techniques. Participants had the opportunity to explore modern approaches in molecular biology and biotechnology while performing the complete experimental workflow - from DNA manipulation to obtaining purified proteins.
As part of the program, three expert lectures were delivered by Michal Nemergut, Ľuboš Ambro, and Erik Sedlák, who introduced students to various aspects of protein engineering, molecular biology, and protein expression. To support the laboratory work, students were provided with detailed experimental protocols, which guided them through each step of the practical exercises. Participants were divided into two working groups, each responsible for conducting specific experimental tasks. At the end of the week, both groups presented their results, summarizing what they had done and what they had learned during the school. All presentations and laboratory protocols are included in these proceedings.
Throughout the course, students were actively engaged in discussions, asked questions, and contributed their own ideas, enriching both the educational experience and collaborative atmosphere. As the Summer School was conducted in Slovak, all original teaching and laboratory materials were provided in the Slovak language. The event and its highlights were subsequently featured on the official CIB website (https://www.tip-cib.sk) and shared through the CIB Instagram page (@cibkesk), helping to promote the initiative to a wider scientific community.
