THE FORMATION OF NEOLOGISMS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Authors/Creators
Description
The rapid development of modern society has significantly influenced the evolution of language, particularly the expansion of vocabulary through neologisms. A neologism is a newly coined word, expression, or a new meaning assigned to an existing word. This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the formation of neologisms in the English language, focusing on the primary word-formation processes such as affixation, compounding, blending, clipping, acronym formation, conversion, borrowing, and semantic shift. Additionally, the study examines the socio-cultural, technological, and linguistic factors that contribute to the emergence and dissemination of neologisms. Drawing on the works of leading linguists such as David Crystal and George Yule, the paper highlights the importance of neologisms as indicators of linguistic creativity and adaptability. The findings suggest that neologisms are essential for effective communication in a rapidly changing world and reflect the dynamic nature of the English lexicon.
