Diagnosis. Same as for the genus.
Redescription. Adults (Fig. 1a). Head with dark brown filiform antennae in both sexes; frons and vertex covered with flattened dark brown scales; labial palpi dark brown, porrect. Thorax with patagia and tegulae bearing orange scales mottled with dark brown scales; legs grayish-white; tibial formula 0-2-4. Abdomen brownish-orange. Forewings subtriangular, bright orange speckled with brown scales toward the base, termen slightly bulged between M 1 and CuA 2; medial band blackish, oblique and slightly sinuate, extending from the costa to the anal angle; terminal band blackish, strongly broadened towards the apex; costa with brownish-gray scales on the proximal half, yellowish-white between the medial and terminal bands up to the level of R 2. Hindwings trapezoidal, bright orange speckled with brown scales toward the base, termen rounded; postmedial band blackish, slightly sinuate; terminal band blackish, subapically broadened and narrowing toward the anal angle; costa with a blackish stripe, interrupted at the postmedial band level in some specimens revealing the ground color, in others continuous. Male genitalia (Fig. 6a). Uncus hook-shaped, apex acute; gnathos absent; valvae scalpel-shaped, costa slightly sclerotized, with an apical spine and a basal brush of curved and elongated androconial setae; sacculus sclerotized; juxta mushroom-shaped, distinctly wider distally; transtilla projected as a falciform process; saccus subquadrate, strongly sclerotized, posterior margin subtriangular. Aedeagus tubular, slightly sinuate; vesica armed with a group of cornuti. Female genitalia (Fig. 6b). Corpus bursae membranous and globose in the distal half, proximal half strongly sclerotized and slightly twisted; signum lanceolate; ductus bursae short, 1/3 the length of the corpus bursae; Antrum short, broad, funnel-shaped; anterior apophyses half the length of the posterior apophyses.
Distribution. As for the genus.
Flight period. Adults have been recorded from August to March.
Biology. Immature stages, host plant, and life cycle were described by King & Parra (2011). Based on the rearing of a clutch of 40 eggs of this species, we report that the larvae, in addition to being associated with the foliage and fruits of “chilco ” (Fuchsia magellanica; Onagraceae), also feed on the foliage of “arrayán ” (Luma apiculata; Myrtaceae) and “hualle” (Nothofagus obliqua; Nothofagaceae), although feeding on this last host was observed only in the absence of the other plants and at low frequency. Larval eclosion takes place after 7 days (n= 40). Larval development extends for 30 days (n= 32), after which pupation occurs, and the adult of one reared individual emerged after 318 days (n= 1). During the day, adults visit flowers of native plants such as Cryptocarya alba, Leptocarpha rivularis, Gaultheria mucronata, and F. magellanica, in addition to flowers of exotic plants such as Myosotis sp., Prunus sp., Cardamine sp., Brassica rapa, Anthriscus caucalis, Erigeron karvinskianus, and Rubus ulmifolius.
