Description
Die bereitgestellte Datenbank ist eine Datensammlung zu historischen Wald und Forststatistiken der österreichischen Kronländer im langen 19. Jahrhundert. Sie entstand im FWF Projekt „Die Industrialisierung Österreichs Wälder 1766-1914 (INFEST)“ am Institut für Soziale Ökologie und hat zum Ziel, biophysische Veränderungen insbesondere Biomassebestände und Biomasseflüsse zu quantifizieren, um eine empirische Grundlage für weitere Arbeiten zu schaffen und langfristige Folgen historischer Waldnutzung für heutige Nachhaltigkeitsfragen sichtbar zu machen.
Die Datensammlung erschließt und erweitert systematisch Datenbestände auf Ebene der Kronländer. Erfasst werden u. a. Waldflächen nach Baumartengruppen, Bewirtschaftungsformen, Eigentum und Kulturgattungen (wie Hoch-, Mittel-, Niederwald), Holzernte und -zuwachs sowie Flächen unter Servituten. Die Datensammlung liegt in deutscher Sprache vor, um den Originalquellen so nah wie möglich zu bleiben, umfasst jedoch auch eine englische Übersetzung.
Die Datenbank beinhaltet Meta-Informationen im Tabellenblatt "Informationen" und ist ausführlich beschrieben in einem gleichnamigen Band zu "Materialien zur Umweltgeschichte Österreichs", hier bereitgestellt, sowie abrufbar unter https://boku.ac.at/zentrum-fuer-umweltgeschichte/zug-materialien. Dieser dokumentiert Quellenbasis, Erfassungslogik und Aufbereitungsschritte, erläutert Unstimmigkeiten und Ausreißer und verweist auf ergänzende Datenbestände. Er dient als methodischer Leitfaden und Nutzungshinweis - sowie als Einladung zur Weiterverwendung in neuen Forschungskontexten.
Die Datenbank steht sowohl als Microsoft-Excel-Datei als auch in Form von CSV-Dateien zur Verfügung.
Abstract (English)
The provided database is a compilation of historical forest and forestry statistics for the Austrian crown lands in the long nineteenth century. It was created within the FWF project “The Industrialization of Austria’s Forests, 1766–1914 (INFEST)” at the Institute of Social Ecology and aims to quantify biophysical change, in particular biomass stocks and biomass flows, in order to provide an empirical basis for further work and to make the long‑term consequences of historical forest use visible for contemporary sustainability questions.
The dataset systematically compiles and expands historical records at the level of the crown lands. It includes, among other variables, forest areas by tree species groups, management types, ownership structures, and silvicultural systems (such as high forest, coppice-with-standards, and coppice), as well as timber harvest and increment, and areas subject to servitudes. The dataset is provided in German to remain as close as possible to the original sources, but also includes an English translation.
The database contains metadata in the worksheet “Informationen” and is comprehensively documented in the accompanying volume of the same name in the "Materials for Environmental History of Austria" series, provided here and also available under https://boku.ac.at/zentrum-fuer-umweltgeschichte/zug-materialien. It documents the source base, data collection logic, and processing steps, discusses inconsistencies and outliers, and refers to complementary datasets. It serves as a methodological guide and user reference, while also inviting reuse in new research contexts.
The database is available both as a Microsoft Excel workbook and in CSV format.
