Beneath the Carpet: Understanding Intergenerational Silence and Family Dynamics in African-Caribbean Families in the United Kingdom

This distinction-awarded MSc Psychology dissertation explores how intergenerational silence is experienced, interpreted, and transmitted within African-Caribbean families in the United Kingdom. Using qualitative interviews and reflexive thematic analysis, the study found silence can function as both a protective survival strategy and a relational barrier affecting emotional expression, identity, and resilience. The findings highlight the importance of culturally responsive, trauma-informed mental health and family support practices.
