Entropy and Negentropy Are Not Opposites
Description
Entropy and negentropy are commonly treated as opposite poles on a single axis: disorder versus order, degradation versus organization, loss versus restoration.
This paper argues that this model is structurally inadequate. Entropy and negentropy do not occupy the same ontological level. Entropy is a projective measure of closure degradation: it appears when coherence is reduced into distinguishable states, inaccessible degrees of freedom, probabilistic uncertainty, thermodynamic dispersion, or boundary-limited observation.
Negentropy, by contrast, is the ontological function of coherence maintenance: it preserves, restores, or intensifies closure across projection, perturbation, and differentiation. Negative entropy is therefore only a restricted local concept within an already defined entropy domain, while ontological negentropy is the deeper closure-maintenance condition that makes ordered persistence possible. The paper develops the level-asymmetry theorem and shows why life, intelligence, mathematical invariance, and cosmic structure do not contradict entropy increase but express a deeper negentropic register.
