NIGERIAN SOFTWARE-DEVELOPED PRODUCTS: A REVIEW OF THE GLOBAL IMAGE AND IMPACT ON GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT (GDP)
Authors/Creators
Description
This study investigates Nigeria-developed software products, examining their global image and impact on Gross Domestic Product (GDP). A mixed-method approach was employed, combining secondary data from government reports, industry databases, and literature with interviews of key software sector stakeholders. Findings reveal that Nigeria’s software industry, led by fintech, e-commerce, and IT services, contributes substantially to GDP, while software exports—valued at approximately US $1.5 billion in 2024—enhance foreign exchange earnings and international market integration. Global perceptions of Nigerian software, influenced by quality, cybersecurity standards, and branding, significantly affect market performance. Comparative analysis with emerging digital economies such as Kenya, South Africa, and Egypt highlights Nigeria’s strengths in market size and entrepreneurial dynamism, alongside challenges in infrastructure, regulation, and digital skills. Policy implications include strengthening export frameworks, enhancing intellectual property protection, investing in skills and infrastructure, and promoting global branding. In conclusion, Nigeria’s software sector is pivotal for economic diversification, with recommendations emphasizing targeted export incentives, quality certification, and strategic partnerships to boost global competitiveness.
