Comments. As mentioned in the original description, the boundaries of the wing spots are nowhere sharp, giving the wing surface a variegated, cloudy appearance that is readily visible to the naked eye. Triangles of setulae and white pruinosity extend across the entire abdominal tergites in some specimens. This species resembles S. albifasciata, from which it differs by the absence of patch on the frons, almost parallel frons and the pattern of spots on the wings. S. maculipennis has yellow spots scattered across more regions of the wing, whereas in S. albifasciata the yellow spots are restricted to cells r 1 and r 2+3. Wilkerson (1979) provided a redescription for S. maculipennis, the specimens examined here differs mainly in length and general body coloration. The specimens examined by Wilkerson measured between 9 and 11 mm, the specimens examined here measure between 11.2 and 13.4 mm, furthermore, according to the author, the species has a yellowish-brown body, but when examining the photographs of the types and the specimens on loan we saw that the general coloration of the body is orange brown. This species was redescribed because we examined a relatively large series of specimens and because S. maculipennis has many similar species (see comments on S. acris, S. claripennis, S. costaricana, and S. flavescens), thus an updated redescription may aid in distinguishing these species.
