Brexit: The State of Play

Dr Colin Swatridge (UK)[1]

Abstract: The 2016 ‘Brexit’ referendum was largely fought out on the issue of immigration, but a right-wing jealousy of British ‘sovereignty’ was also a key factor. There was a desire to reclaim our borders and repatriate our laws. The warnings issued by those who voted Remain were dismissed by those who voted to Leave as ‘Project Fear’; but many of the consequences of Brexit that the former warned about were, in fact, realized. With its substantial majority in the 2024 general election, the Labour government under Sir Keir Starmer was in a position to bring about a closer alignment of the UK with the EU; but he had to tread warily. As public opinion moved in favour of a ‘re-setting’ of the relationship, so Starmer was able to take steps necessary to mitigate some of the more negative effects of the 2016 vote.

Keywords: referendum, immigration, sovereignty, realignment, red lines, mobility
