Научната школа на проф. Тодор Боров

Professor Todor Borov (January 30, 1901 – May 27, 1993), father of the world-renowned scholars Professor Tzvetan Todorov and Professor Ivan Todorov, was the founder of Bulgarian higher education in the fields of book studies, libraries, and scientific information, the first Bulgarian to receive a higher education in bibliography and library science in Germany, and the first Bulgarian professor of book studies and bibliography (Sofia University). The concept of “Prof. Todor Borov’s research school” encompasses only the strictly academic profile of its members – doctoral candidates who have defended their dissertations and received the academic degree of “Doctor.” The research method involves the study of empirical and archival documents. As of early 2026, the school led by Prof. Todor Borov comprises a total of 21 scholars. A total of 23 dissertations have been defended within the school – 21 for the degree of “Doctor” and 2 for the degree of “Doctor of Science.” For the first time, handwritten notes and recommendations by Prof. Borov on a dissertation by one of his doctoral students are being published. The study synthesizes the contributions in the scientific fields of Prof. Todor Borov, developed by his students. A unique profile of the professor as a dissertation advisor has been constructed, with a special emphasis on his editorial pedagogy, writing hygiene, his perfectionism regarding language and text, and his meticulousness regarding bibliography and citation. As a result of the study, three of Prof. Borov’s theses have been highlighted as increasingly relevant: the danger of informational and bibliographic illiteracy, the importance of doctoral programs, and continuity as a fundamental principle of the University.
