The Kharia Language: Linguistic Structure, Sociocultural Context, and Contemporary Challenges

  • 1. Department of Kharia, Simdega College, Simdega

Description

The Kharia language is an indigenous tribal language of eastern India, belonging to the South Munda branch of the Austroasiatic language family. It is primarily spoken by the Kharia tribal community across Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh, serving as a critical repository of cultural heritage, oral traditions, and indigenous knowledge systems. Kharia encodes rich ecological and social knowledge, including specialized vocabulary for flora, fauna, agriculture, rituals, and seasonal cycles, reflecting the community’s close interaction with its natural environment. Despite its historical continuity, Kharia faces growing challenges due to multilingualism, the dominance of regional and national languages, urbanization, migration, and limited institutional support, which have collectively weakened intergenerational transmission. This chapter provides a comprehensive analysis of the Kharia language, addressing its genetic classification, historical development, geographical distribution, dialectal variation, phonology, morphology, syntax, and lexicon. It further explores sociolinguistic dynamics, the cultural and ecological significance of Kharia, and contemporary issues of language endangerment. Finally, the chapter discusses documentation initiatives, policy frameworks, and community-driven revitalization strategies, emphasizing the importance of preserving Kharia not only as a linguistic system but also as a living cultural identity. By highlighting the interplay of language, culture, and environment, this study contributes to broader discussions on linguistic diversity, indigenous knowledge preservation, and cultural sustainability.
