Description
Park Cool Island (PCI) is a phenomenon where urban parks are significantly cooler than its surrounding built-up areas. This paper studies the thermal benefit of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in August 2024, utilising a distributed network of 31 bespoke LoRaWAN air temperature sensors deployed across London. Findings reveal that while the park ranks as a significant cool space comparing to other stations across the city, with average temperatures up to 1.5°C lower than its surroundings at night, the cooling influence is primarily confined within its boundaries. Results also demonstrate the efficacy of low-cost sensor networks in capturing micro-scale thermal heterogeneity.
