Description
The rapid expansion of online grocery (e-grocery) platforms has significantly transformed retail distribution, consumer behavior, and supply chain management. While sustainability has emerged as a critical strategic priority, differences in operational environments between rural and urban areas create unique challenges and opportunities for implementing sustainable practices. This research paper examines sustainability practices in rural versus urban online grocery operations, focusing on environmental, economic, and social dimensions. Using a comparative analytical framework, the study explores logistics optimization, packaging practices, food waste management, digital infrastructure, energy utilization, and community engagement strategies. The findings indicate that urban e-grocery operations benefit from advanced technological integration and infrastructure, enabling efficient route optimization and waste reduction. Conversely, rural operations demonstrate strengths in local sourcing, shorter supply chains, and community-based models, but face infrastructural and technological constraints. The study concludes with strategic recommendations for policymakers and entrepreneurs to promote inclusive and environmentally responsible e-grocery growth.
