Functional Androgen Axis (FOA): A Conceptual Framework for Multi-Layered Assessment of Male Hormonal Function.
Authors/Creators
Description
The Functional Androgen Axis (FOA) is a conceptual framework for multi-layered assessment of male hormonal function beyond isolated biomarker interpretation. The model proposes a four-layer architecture - androgenic load (AL), receptor capacity (RC), output efficiency (O), and androgen sensitivity environment (ASE) - operationalized through three core constructs and four quantitative indices (ALi, RCi, Oi, ASEi). FOA addresses a critical gap in clinical and consultative practice where standard reference ranges fail to capture functional hormonal status, enabling systematic identification of the specific bottleneck responsible for symptom persistence despite "normal" laboratory results. The framework is supported by an 80-item bibliography and has been applied in over 500 individual consultations.
