Description

EN This article reconstructs the life and work of the almost forgotten quick‑change artist Castor Watt (Paul Burwig, 1858–1932), who performed on European variety stages and on Broadway around 1900. Drawing on contemporary press reports, contracts, and programme announcements, it traces his career and examines “how a widely acclaimed artist could fall into oblivion” (manuscript). The analysis highlights the aesthetics of his transformation art, his international mobility, and the cultural and media conditions that contributed to the disappearance of his stage presence from cultural memory. Castor Watt emerges as an exemplary figure for the ephemerality of variety theatre around 1900 and the mechanisms of cultural remembrance.
