The Proto-Indo-European Origin of J1-P58: The Mitanni Migrations That Shaped the Levant and Beyond

Thesis Statement
Y-chromosome haplogroup J1-P58 is not, in its foundational origin, a Semitic or Levantine lineage. It is the patrilineal legacy of the Caucasus-Lower-Volga Proto-Indo-Anatolians — the founder population of the Northern Fertile Crescent whose descendants gave rise to the first Proto-Indo-European language family, and whose migrations seeded every major branch of the Indo-European world.
This thesis advances three interlocking propositions, each independently supported by the archaeogenetic record, the historical and linguistic evidence, and the stipulated textual sources of the opposing claimants themselves.
Proposition I: The Founder Proposition
J1-P58 and its ancestral clades did not arise among passive, localized Zagrosian farmers subsequently absorbed into Semitic culture, nor were they introduced into the steppe world through conquest by northern R1a carriers. Rather, J1 lineages were constitutive founders of the Caucasus-Lower-Volga genetic corridor — the population identified by Harvard, Max Planck, and Oxford as contributing approximately 80% of the ancestry of the Yamnaya culture, itself the engine of Proto-Indo-European dispersal. The J1-P58 mutation zone sits directly on the southern edge of this CLV corridor, in the Armenian Highlands and Northern Fertile Crescent, predating the Semitic expansions of the Levant by millennia. The lineage did not enter the Indo-European world. It helped build it.
Proposition II: The Migration Proposition
From this founding position, J1-P58 sub-clades dispersed along two primary trajectories that account for their entire global distribution without requiring a Semitic or Levantine intermediate. The southern trajectory carried the lineage through the Mitanni elite — the Indo-Aryan chariot aristocracy whose Vedic deity names and horse-training terminology attest to a non-Semitic, non-Hurrian cultural identity — into the Levant and eventually into populations that would become linguistically Semiticized over centuries of cultural absorption. The northern trajectory carried the same lineage eastward through the Sintashta-Fëdorovo-Tian Shan pipeline, into the Saka, Sarmatian, and Alanic world, and ultimately westward into Europe through the Avar period and the Vandal-Alanic migrations into Iberia. The modern prevalence of J1-P58 among Arab, Jewish, and Kurdish populations reflects the success of these secondary Semiticization events, not the lineage’s original ethno-linguistic identity.
Proposition III: The Dispossession Proposition
The institutional misclassification of J1-P58 as a Semitic or priestly Levantine lineage constitutes a double dispossession. It simultaneously misattributes an Iranic-Steppe patriline to a cultural framework that did not produce it, and displaces the genuinely Afro-Asiatic E1b1b1 lineages — those of the Samaritan Cohanim and the Davidic Luria rabbinical family, who carry an unbroken patrilineal chain of over 14,000 years consistent with the original language family of Semitics — from their rightful evidentiary standing. The Cohen Modal Haplotype studies, constructed entirely from modern DNA without a single ancient DNA verification, do not meet the evidentiary standard required to sustain these claims against the now-robust archaeogenetic record. The burden of proof has shifted, and it has not been met.

Version 4 Additions:  Version 4 expands upon Version 3 by: refining the geographic origin model from “Pontic-Steppe” to the Caucasus-Lower-Volga (CLV) corridor and Northern Fertile Crescent; establishing the Iranic dynasty of the Qajars’ confirmed Y-DNA as a modern parallel for the Iranic-Steppe J1 profile; deepening the four-phase linguistic transition model from Proto-Indo-Aryan through East Iranian to the Alanic-Iberian diaspora; examining the Biblical genealogy of Abraham to assess the relative genetic standing of J1-P58 versus E1b1b1 claimants under the stipulated textual sources; and presenting the confirmed Afanasievo-Xiongnu-Sarmatian chain linking ancient sample SHT002 to UGU006 (J-FGC8182) as direct archaeogenetic proof of the northern steppe trajectory. Version 4 further discusses and integrates the Proto-Alarodian hypothesis — the hypothesized language family connecting Proto-Indo-European and Hurro-Urartian — as the framework explaining the linguistic fossils shared between Caucasian and Iranian language families and the genetic heritage that underlies them.
