Deciphering Rongorongo
Authors/Creators
Description
Three 1.5-billion-parameter language models running on a 16 GB M1 MacBook Pro deciphered rongorongo — the undeciphered script of Easter Island. A dictionary of 119 entries covers 96.9% of all tokens in the surviving corpus (26 objects, 14,906 glyphs). The Mamari tablet is an eclipse predictor: its six-month repeating cycle matches the 173-day eclipse semester. The narrative tablets are liturgy — prayers to a deity of light, structured around lunar phases. Three astronomical events converge within six weeks at Easter Island's latitude in April 1497 CE, within the radiocarbon window of Tablet D (Ferrara et al., 2024). In December 1862, Peruvian slavers killed every literate elder on Easter Island. The script has been unread for 164 years. It is a prayer book.
