Res0sem agronomical dataset

Description

This data set is related to the res0sem project. It is a project aiming at finding alternatives to seed treatment in field crops. It consists in on-farm trials in the cantons of Vaud and Valais (Switzerland). This data set is used in the paper Agronomic Performance and Microbial Diversity of Wheat Following Organic and Synthetic Seed Treatments: A Three-Year On-Farm Swiss Field Study. The analyses can be found in this github repository This is an on-farm study and most of the data where collected by the producers.

Description of the data set

The table contains agronomic data on wheat treated with various seed treatments and planted in comparison plots. The data includes variables reflecting the crop’s condition during the growing season (number of plants) and variables from post-harvest analyses (yield, protein content, thousand grain weight). Data collection took place for the harvest years 2022, 2023, and 2024. The different wheat varieties sown by producers are not considered.

Description of methods for data collection or generation

There are several covariates:

  • CODE: Farm code (identifier)
  • Region : name of the region of the farm
  • Production mode : three categories, "organic", "conventional without fungicide", "conventional with fungicide"
  • Year
  • Treatment: Treatment, see details in the paper.
  • Treatment_Group same as `Treatment` but some categories with very few occurrences where aggregated into the category `Other treatment`

The variables of interests are (written in French)

  • Rendement (Yield)[dT/ha]: reported by producers who weigh their harvest at harvest time and measure their fields.
  • Proteine [%]: The protein content of the wheat sample, expressed as a percentage. This content is determined by NIRS analysis (NIRFlex N-500 instrument, Büchi Labortechnik AG, Switzerland)
  • TGW.g [gr]: The thousand grain weight is measured using the Marvin grain analyzer (GTA Sensorik, Neubrandenburg, Germany), which determines the number of kernels in a given volume and then weighs them.
  • Nombre.Plants.avg [nb plants/m]: After emergence, producers measure the number of plants over a 4x1 m area. The result is the average of these four measurements per treatment.

Note on privacy

While the precise locations of the crops where collected, they are not disclosed for privacy reasons.
