THE QUR’AN: The Basmalah is a standalone study within THE QUR’AN: A Root-Based Qur’an-by-the-Qur’an Translation in Order of Revelation. It presents the Qur’anic opening formula in layered form: Arabic text, transliteration, Word-by-Word, translation, Root Word Analysis, Qur’an-by-the-Qur’an Interpretation, Interpretive Proposal, Mathematical Observations, and appendix material. In this study, the Basmalah is treated as a distinct foundational unit within the wider project and as the canonical opening formula of the Qur’an.

This Zenodo record includes the PDF edition, a downloadable EPUB edition, and supplementary CSV datasets. The PDF preserves the fixed scholarly layout, while the EPUB is provided for reflowable digital reading. The accompanying datasets support transparency, verification, sorting, reuse, and independent analysis of the lexical and numerical observations discussed in the Basmalah study and related project materials.

This study follows the project’s updated conventions of using ayah / ayat for revealed Qur’anic units and of treating key divine titles in translation with capitalization. In this work, the Basmalah is rendered:

In the name of God, The Almighty, The Merciful.

The study explains this rendering through Qur’an-by-the-Qur’an lexical and thematic analysis, distinguishing the force of bismi, the idiomatic English rendering of Allah as God, and the differentiated treatment of al-Raḥmān and al-Raḥīm.

A central aim of this Basmalah study is to preserve distinction where English translations often flatten the paired divine names into near-synonyms. In this reading, al-Raḥmān is treated in its wider Qur’anic force as a sovereign, overwhelming, world-ordering divine name, while al-Raḥīm is treated as the directed, enduring, creature-facing mercy of God. The study therefore reads the Basmalah not as a decorative opening formula, but as a declaration of invocation, authority, sovereignty, and mercy.

Mathematical observations in this volume are selective and secondary rather than controlling. The Basmalah PDF includes selected narrative mathematical observations, while detailed proofs, tables, and reproducible datasets are provided separately as supplementary CSV files. These include datasets for the word Allah, al-Raḥmān, al-Raḥīm, surah sequence mapping, and related numerical studies. This structure keeps the main study readable while preserving auditability in the numerical layer.

The supplementary CSV files in this record include canonical and revealed-order arrangements where applicable, together with README and manifest files documenting dataset structure, source notes, dates, rights, and attribution. These files are intended to support independent review of the project’s lexical, positional, and mathematical observations.

This work is a human translation and study of the Arabic Qur’an. It is not a substitute for the Arabic text, nor should any translation be treated as identical with revelation. The Arabic Qur’an remains primary, and all translations remain human renderings rather than revelation itself.
