Divine Names as Morphological State Indicators in the Torah: Evidence Against Multiple Authorship from Morphological Mode Analysis

Description
Description / Abstract
This paper demonstrates that the divine names in the Torah (יהוה, אלהים, שדי, אהיה) are not decorative labels but structural nodes in a morphological network. Each name is composed of a distinct letter-group "recipe" from the four-group classification system (Foundation / AMTN / YHW / BKL) that encodes its function.
This work extends the findings of Tuval (2026), "The Torah as a Structurally Constrained Morphological System" (Zenodo DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18744642), which established that Biblical Hebrew's morphological architecture is governed by a restricted control alphabet of 10 letters (Z = 150.49, p < 10⁻⁵⁰).
### 23 Findings:
**Name Hierarchy:** יהוה = HHHH (pure YHW grammar layer, 1,624×); אלהים = ABHHA (all 4 groups, 194×); שדי = FFH (Foundation dominant — ONLY divine name with F majority, 10×); אהיה = AHHH (self-declaration, appears once in entire Torah at Exodus 3:14).
**Key Results:**
- "אנכי יהוה אלהיך" = ZERO Foundation letters — the most important declaration is pure structure
- "אהיה אשר אהיה" = Grammar–Content–Grammar structure, mirroring Torah's own macro-structure (ב...ל)
- יהוה speaks/commands/writes (LANGUAGE); אלהים creates/remembers (REALITY)
- Name Persistence (Markov): יהוה = 93.3%; אלהים = 57.5%
- YHW Permeation: text around יהוה has +3.6% more YHW letters (MI Z = 95.6)
- Inflection Direction: BKL suffixes = God→human; YHW suffixes = human→God
- Tense-Person Crossover: each name's first letter = OPPOSITE person of its usage context
- אלהיך = 92% concentrated in Deuteronomy (χ² = 1,076.9)
- Priestly Blessing = 3, 5, 7 words (primes); יהוה always word #2
- Parsha structure: 81% open with ו (YHW); 91% close with Foundation
- Torah bookends: בראשית + כלישראל = ALL 4 letter groups
- Exodus 6:3: Torah describes its own interpretive methodology (content → structure)
### 12 Ablation Tests (ALL connections prove significant):
| Test | What Breaks | Z-score |
|------|-------------|---------|
| MI: Name↔YHW% | Letter composition information | Z = 95.6 |
| Replace names with random words | Group transition entropy | Z = −67.6 |
| MI: Name↔Foundation% | Content layer information | Z = 51.1 |
| Replace names with random words | Autocorrelation | Z = −23.6 |
| Shuffle name positions (200×) | Name persistence | Z = 20.0 |
| Replace names with random words | Foundation variance | Z = 15.4 |
| Shuffle verse order | Foundation variance | Z = 6.3 |
| Swap יהוה ↔ אלהים | Environment coherence | −10% |
| Cross-book name swap (Gen↔Deut) | Environment coherence | Reversed |
| Remove ו from non-name words | YHW signal | −24% |
| Remove divine names entirely | YHW clustering | −0.019 |
| Swap Foundation↔YHW letters | Name-environment coherence | Destroyed |
### Against the Documentary Hypothesis:
- Vocabulary overlap J/E = 46% (too high for independent authors)
- Foundation% difference = only 1.01% (t = 2.48)
- Name persistence Z = 20.0 (200/200 — not random assignment)
- Cross-book name swap REVERSES coherence
### Fractal Structure (5 levels):
1. Letters: Foundation=content, YHW=grammar (Z=150.49)
2. Names: יהוה=grammar-word, אלהים=system-word, שדי=content-word
3. Text: Name environment matches name type (MI Z=95.6)
4. Narrative: Genesis(אלהים/creation)→Deuteronomy(יהוה/law) = content→structure
5. Self-description: Exodus 6:3 — Torah narrates its own interpretive methodology
**Combined Z ≈ 210. p < 10⁻¹⁰⁰.**
