Atlas of Martian Geography: MC-12

Authors/Creators

Description

MC-12, titled Arabia, is the twelfth sectional chart in the Atlas of Martian Geography, the visual companion to the Encyclopedia of Martian Geography (Thomas Gangale, JSD). This high-resolution map covers the Arabia quadrangle of Mars, encompassing the transition zone between the ancient southern highlands of Terra Sabaea and the northern lowlands, including portions of Arabia Terra and Meridiani Planum. The chart overlays revived classical albedo features from 19th-century telescopic observers (Schiaparelli, Lowell, and others) onto precise MOLA-derived topography, without altering official IAU nomenclature. It supports applications in planetary science, historical cartography, astrogeology, and prospective human exploration by providing enriched place-name context that bridges early visual astronomy with modern topographic and geologic understanding. The chart is distributed open-access via the Zenodo record for Volume 1, alongside the full encyclopedia text and other sectional charts in the series. Citation recommended:
