SEISMIC SITUATION IN RUSSIA: HISTORICAL FEATURES AND FORECASTS
Authors/Creators
Description
The article demonstrates that the Unified Seismic Observation System (ЕSSN) operates in the Russian Federation. It comprises stations located throughout the country and analytical centers whose primary purpose is to generate long-term forecasts. The Central Asian Regional Earthquake Forecasting Center, operating under the Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Seismology of the Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, is responsible for monitoring seismic activity in Russia and the CIS. The Caucasus Regional Center, located in Tbilisi, also serves as an operational hub. A territorial forecasting center in Kamchatka also conducts research. Addressing medium-term forecasting issues is considered more challenging. In this area, the forecast horizon is reduced to several weeks, and each day becomes crucial for data collection and analysis, necessitating the implementation of automated forecasting systems. Individual components of such systems are already being used in a number of regions of Russia.
