Description

This report presents the results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses conducted on fourteen bulk rock samples collected from several survey regions in the southeastern part of the Regional Unit of Grevena, within the Mesohellenic Trough. The investigated materials represent a range of sedimentary lithologies, including sandstone, marly sandstone, conglomeratic sandstone, conglomerate and marl, originating from the Kipourio (Eptachori equivalent), Basal, Krania, Pentalofos and Tsotyli molassic formations. In addition, one sample of serpentinized harzburgite derived from the Mesozoic ophiolitic basement was analyzed in order to provide a mineralogical reference for ultramafic source material potentially contributing detritus to the basin deposits. The samples were collected during field surveys carried out within the framework of the PilotSTRATEGY research project and were analyzed using XRD in combination with Rietveld refinement techniques in order to determine their qualitative and semi-quantitative mineralogical composition. The analyses allowed the identification and quantification of major and minor mineral phases, including carbonate minerals, quartz, feldspars, clay minerals, and mafic to ultramafic phases. The results contribute to the mineralogical characterization of the molassic sedimentary units of the Mesohellenic Trough and provide insights into the relative contributions of siliciclastic, carbonate and ophiolitic source materials, as well as the role of diagenetic processes affecting the studied lithologies.
