ShipAdvisor: Best Ways to Explore the Mediterranean in the 18th & 19th Centuries
Authors/Creators
Description
This project launches the prototype web application ShipAdvisor, loosely inspired by the modern-day TripAdvisor, to chart historical travel patterns across the Mediterranean in the 18th and 19th centuries. This visualization will guide the user to discover the most popular routes, and to examine the perceptions of safety and danger associated with them. These perceptions are shaped not only by environmental factors such as weather conditions, but also by historical phenomena like Mediterranean piracy (e.g. De Lange 2020). The project draws inspiration from digital humanities platforms such as ArcGIS StoryMaps and Itiner-e.
