EST-MMX-001: Michelson–Morley Revisited The Null Result, Emergent Relativity, and the Case for a Self-Referential Medium

The Michelson–Morley experiment is commonly presented as the death of a physical medium
underlying light and matter. This paper argues that the conclusion was narrower than the slogan.
What failed was a particular kind of medium: passive, absolute, and externally measurable
by instruments presumed to stand outside it. If instead the medium is active, self-referential,
and is also the substance from which rods, clocks, atoms, and observers are made, then a
null drift result is not only unsurprising but expected. This reframes the historical lesson. The
Michelson–Morley experiment did not rule out all media; it ruled out a medium of the wrong
kind.
The paper then asks what properties a viable hidden medium must possess in order to remain
locally undetectable while still producing observable physics through strain, curvature, and
defect structure. Special attention is given to the two senses in which such a medium must be
self-referential: ontologically, because measuring devices are made of it, and dynamically,
because the local state of the medium sets the standards by which measurement is defined. In
EST, Lorentz invariance is therefore not taken as fundamental but as an emergent low-energy
observational symmetry of internal excitations in a sufficiently homogeneous background state.
This leads naturally to the EST picture of an elastic substrate whose excitations and topological
defects appear as particles, forces, and cosmic structure. The final sections summarize the
present EST test program: a void-lattice and repulsive-lensing signature on cosmological scales,
and a geometric account of the neutrino hierarchy on particle scales.
