Abstract
The rendering algebra R12 ∼= M12(C) of Array Cosmology uses 12 axes, yet the ratio 13/12 appears universally in physical formulae—the proton mass (144 × 13/2), the baryon knot constant (Kknot = (13/12)Znoise/144), and the proton-toelectron mass ratio (µ = 1836 + (13/12)(π − 3)).
We show that this “13th axis” is the mathematical signature of recursive self-observation, governed by the M¨obius transformation f(x) = x/(1 − x) whose matrix M =1 0−1 1 ∈ SL(2,Z). Thirteen A-layer results are proved.
(1) The n-fold composition fn(x) = x/(1 − nx) is established by induction.
(2) The total self-reference cost S = Znoise/(1 − Znoise) + Znoise · Φ(Znoise, 1, 12), where Φ is the Lerch transcendent, converges if and only if Znoise < 1, equivalently π < 3 + 1/ ln 2.
(3) The matrix Mk belongs to the congruence subgroup Γ0(12) if and only if 12 | k; the minimal period is 12.
(4) The pole of f n (S) occurs at n = 1/S ≈ 8.49, strictly between the integers 8 and 9; for n < 1/S the iterate is positive and for n > 1/S it is negative.
(5) The selfreference cost S lies strictly between the cusps 1/9 and 1/8: it is an irrational point in the interior of the modular curve, never coinciding with any rational cusp.
(6) The sign reversal f 12(S) < 0 occurs at the first iterate in Γ0(12), connecting the 12-fold self-reference period to the CPT anti-involution of Paper XX.
(7) The compositions σ = g ◦ f and τ = f ◦ g, where g(x) = 1 + 1/x is the golden-ratio recursion, generate a group ⟨σ, τ ⟩ of order exactly 12—the number of axes in R12.
(8) By Cohn’s theorem (1964), F12 = 144 = 122
is the unique non-trivial solution of Fn = n2, connecting Axiom 1 (n = 12) to Axiom 5 (φ) at the level of self-reference.
(9) The Fibonacci matrix satisfies M12 g ≡ 5I (mod 12), where 5 is the prime of φ; the Pisano period is π(12) = 24.
(10) The image of ⟨Mf , Mg⟩ in GL(2, Z/12Z) has index 2, consisting of matrices with det ∈ {1, 11}; the determinant values {5, 7} are unreachable.
(11) Since 5 ∈/ Im(det) and φ is rooted in the prime 5, Axiom 5 is group-theoretically independent of the structure generated by Axioms 1– 4.
(12) The kernel K = ⟨Mf , Mg⟩ ∩ Γ(12) is an infinite, non-abelian, torsionfree group of “invisible self-references” that act trivially modulo 12. Four B-layer propositions note that 12S ≈√2 (error 0.03%), that ⌊1/S⌋ = 8 = dim su(3), and
that the convergence condition Znoise < 1 constitutes a phase transition separating observable universes from self-referential divergence.
