TEI-Encoded Critical Text Dataset of the Engishiki 延喜式校訂テキストデータセット(TEI/XML)

This dataset provides a TEI/XML-encoded critically edited text of the Engishiki, an ancient Japanese legal and administrative code.

Compiled in the 10th century, the Engishiki functioned as a procedural manual for government officials. It contains a wide range of information, including regional products across ancient Japan, shrines throughout the country, raw materials for court use, and offerings to deities. These records provide valuable insights into the environment, technology, daily life, and society of ancient Japan and East Asia.

However, the extant manuscripts contain numerous transcription errors, and the text itself is often difficult to interpret.

To facilitate broader use of this important source, the National Museum of Japanese History (Rekihaku) is developing a new critically edited text, along with modern Japanese and English translations, based on stemmatological research of manuscript lineages.

This dataset contains only the TEI-encoded critical text. The modern Japanese and English translations are provided as separate datasets published simultaneously, each assigned its own DOI.
