Description

Sperchon milisai Pešić, 2022

Material examined. Türkiye: Trabzon Province, Çaykara, Çataklı Stream, Uzungöl Lake Basin, 40.76722° N, 40.25611° E, 19 Oct. 2024, leg. Pešić, Zawal, BaytaŞoğlu, Kumru & Bayçelebi 0/1/0 (barcoded).

Remarks. The examined specimen from Trabzon used in this study for molecular analysis matches the description of Sperchon milisai, a species previously known only from the Western Balkans (Pešić et al. 2025c). The molecularly studied specimens from eastern Türkiye form a unique BIN (BOLD:AGO5836), with the nearest neighboring BIN being BOLD:AGG3937, which includes a single specimen of S. milisai from Bosnia and Herzegovina. The p - distance between these two BINs was estimated at 4.65%.As emphasized by Pešić (2022), it is likely that, due to the unsclerotized excretory pore, females of S. milisai were previously confused with S. clupeifer, a species frequently reported from streams in Europe and Türkiye (Erman et al. 2010; Pešić et al. 2025c). Males of S. clupeifer, however, can be readily distinguished by their dorsal shield, more slender palps (P-4 L/H ratio>5.5), and differently shaped ejaculatory complex (see Pešić 2022).

Distribution: Western Balkan (Montenegro, Croatia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina; Pešić et al. 2025c). New for Türkiye.
