Description
The Vanuatu Linguistic Survey was developed by the Comparative Oceanic Linguistics group at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in collaboration with the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) in France. It is used as a tool for understanding the language situation, language history and repertoire of individual speakers, as well as elicitation of multiple domains of vocabulary for preliminary language documentation.
This survey includes lists for elicitation of basic vocabulary, extended vocabulary that relfects environmentally and culturally relevant vocabulary to the Western Pacific, and kinship terms. The survey also includes sections on the language situation, the language background of individual consultants.
This survey can be easily adapted for use in any linguistic study, and serves as a standard for any preliminary documentation project.
