Merodon triangulum Vujic, Radenkovic & Hurkmans 2020

Description

Merodon triangulum Vujić, Radenković & Hurkmans, 2020

Fig. 17A, B

Distribution. Central Europe eastward to Ukraine (Vujić et al. 2020b; Janković & Radenković 2021; Aracil et al. 2022b, 2024). Altitude: 3–776 m asl.

Host plant. Leucojum vernum (Fig. 17A).

Examined material. UKRAINE: 1♂ (1 P) from 1 L3 (CEUA). SERBIA: 3♀♀ (3 P) from 6 L3 (FSUNS) (see Aracil et al. 2024). Sampling method 2.

Notes. As mentioned in the Introduction, M. equestris damages the underground organs of many ornamental plants mainly from Amaryllidaceae, in particular snowdrops and snowflakes. However, host plants for M. equestris have not been found in the wild (Andrić et al. 2014). During field research in 2019–2020, we found larvae of M. equestris in Leucojum vernum bulbs (two points in the Western Ukraine: Antalovetska Polyana (48.675417° N, 22.49325° E), R. Mishustin leg.; Starunya (48.7083071° N, 24.4664652° E), V. Shparyk leg.).
