Description

Clytia hemisphaerica (Linnaeus, 1767)

Medusa hemisphaerica Linnaeus, 1767: 1098.

Clytia hemisphaerica: Cornelius, 1995b: 252–255, fig. 57.— Gil & Ramil, 2025: 32 (synonymy).

Material examined. Vertidos-2004: Stn. AG-AT-150-04, one colony without gonothecae growing on Sertularella gayi. —Stn. CH-EBS-150-04, one colony with gonothecae, growing on a polychaete tube.

Biology. The biology of this species has been recently reviewed by Gil & Ramil (2025). Our material was found growing on S. gayi and on a polychaete tube. Gonothecae were found in September.

Distribution. Clytia hemisphaerica is a circumglobal species (Calder 1991), and its bathymetric distribution ranges between 0 and 702 m (Peña Cantero & García Carrascosa 2002). Our material was collected at depths between 147– 150 m.
