Description

Zanchius hopkinsi Kim & Chérot, sp. nov. (Figs 5–6)

Type materials. Holotype: 1♂, Vietnam, Da Nang City, Phuoc Son, Phuoc Duc (15.4611° N, 107.8019° E), 15.vi.2025, J. Kim leg., 314 m altitude, on Mallotus barbatus [ZCDTU]; Paratypes: 1♂ 4♀♀, same data as holotype, [ZCDTU]; 3♂♂ 5♀♀, Vietnam, Da Nang City, Hoa Vang, Hoa Lien, Hoa Trung Lake (16.0891° N, 108.0425° E), 10.vi.2025, J. Kim leg., 90 m altitude, on Mallotus barbatus [ZCDTU].

Diagnosis. Recognized from other congeners by body pale green with large greenish spots on dorsum, sparsely covered with long pale setae; postocular distance short, clearly shorter than first antennal segment maximal diameter; antennae mostly pale brown with dark spots and annulations, subequal to body length; first segment with dark long spot laterally and dark spot apically; second segment with small dark spot at base and two dark annulations subbasally and medially; hemelytron pale brown, with large greenish spots extending from corium to clavus; two cells on membrane tinged with green, posterior parts hyaline; left paramere long, vertically angled at sensory lobe, hypophysis apically curled, apex sharp; right paramere long, rod-shaped, simple, hypophysis round and apex blunt; endosoma with four spicules; first spicule long and sharp apically; second and third spicules large and broad, fourth spicule small, rod-shaped (Fig. 6A–G).

Description. MALE: Coloration: Head: Mostly pale green with greenish markings; vertex and frons yellowish pale brown; postocular entirely pale green; clypeus, mandibular plate and antennal socket pale green; antennae mostly pale brown with dark spots and annulations; first segment pale brown with dark elongate spot at lateral side and dark apical spot; second segment pale brown with small dark basal spot, and with dark subbasal and medial annulations, annulations variable in length, sometimes medial annulation indistinct; third segment brown with dark basal part; fourth segment brown; labium entirely greenish pale brown except for dark apex of fourth segment. Thorax: Pronotum mostly pale brown or pale green with bluish green spots and with distinct medial pale spot; scutellum pale brown with greenish marking, apices paler; hemelytra pale brown with large greenish spots; clavus pale brown with greenish area at anterior, middle and posterior parts; corium pale brown with greenish spots at subanterior, middle and posterior parts, greenish spots continuous across greenish spots in clavus; cuneus semi-hyaline with greenish spot medially; two cells on membrane tinged with green, continuous from greenish spot at cuneus, posterior parts of two cells hyaline; legs mostly pale brown weakly tinged with green; tarsus brown, except for dark pretarsus. Abdomen: Entirely pale brown weakly tinged with green. Surface and vestiture: Body shining, covered with pale setae; head glossy, postocular region transversely covered with denser setae; medial part of vertex sparsely setose; frons covered with setae; antennae covered with recumbent setae; first antennal segment with recumbent and some erected setae; pronotum generally sparsely covered with setae, anterior portion including calli with relatively dense setae, lateral margin densely covered with setae, medial portion sparsely setose; scutellum sparsely covered with setae medially; hemelytra sparsely covered with setae. Structure: Body elongate-oval, length 3.08–3.16 mm. Head: Hypognathous, about two times as wide as long; vertex about 1.5 times as wide as single compound eye; frons weakly protruding forward of compound eye in dorsal view; postocular distance clearly shorter than first antennal segment maximal diameter; antennae linear, subequal to body length; first segment thick, subequal to head length and to vertex width; second segment about 4.5 times as long as first segment, about 0.88 times as long as combined third and fourth segments; third segment subequal to fourth segment; proportion of first to fourth antennal segments 0.30: 1.33: 0.78: 0.74; labium reaching hindcoxae. Thorax: Pronotum trapezoid, posterior margin concave, posteriorly twice wider than long; calli weakly swollen; both scutellum and exposed part of mesoscutum large, combined mesial length about 0.85 times its width, longer than pronotum; commissure about 1.3 times scutellum length; cuneus elongate, cuneal length laterally shorter than one third corial length; hindtibia subequal to embolial margin length. Abdomen: Tapered to apex, not reaching apex of cuneus, with large pygophore. Genitalia: Pygophore asymmetrical (Fig. 6A–D); apex concave, right side extending farther than left side, posterior margin unevenly straight in dorsal view; left side extending farther than right side, posterior margin almost striaght in ventral view; left paramere long and vertically angled at sensory lobe, sensory lobe thick and angled with long setae, hypophysis apically curled, apex sharp (Fig. 6E); right paramere long, rod-shaped, hypophysis round and blunt, sensory lobe weakly broadened (Fig. 6F); endosoma with four spicules (sp), sp I long and tapered, apex sharp; sp II and III large and broad; margin of sp III serrate; sp IV small, rod-shaped (Fig. 6G). FEMALE: Coloration: as in male. Surface and vestiture: as in male. Structure: as in male, except for wider vertex, about 1.7 times as wide as single compound eye; proportion of first to fourth antennal segments 0.29: 1.25: 0.80: 0.72. Genitalia: posterior wall with simple interramal lobe (irl), irl contiguous, slightly expanded from interramal sclerite (irs), outer margin of irl sinuate (Fig. 6H); sclerotized rings (sr) narrow, difficult to recognize, labiate plate oval, with serrate areas (Fig. 6I).

Measurement (in mm). Male (n=3)/Female (n=4) Body length, clypeus–apex of membrane: 3.08–3.16/3.20– 3.32; head length, excluding collar: 0.30–0.32/0.28–0.30; head width, including compound eyes: 0.62–0.64/0.56– 0.58; vertex width: 0.25–0.28/0.26–0.27; 1 st antennal segment length: 0.29–0.30/0.28–0.29; 2 nd antennal segment length: 1.31–1.35/1.24–1.27; 3 rd antennal segment length: 0.75–0.81/0.79–0.82; 4 th antennal segment length: 0.71– 0.77/0.71–0.73; total antennal length: 3.10–3.21/3.03–3.10; mesial pronotal length: 0.39–0.40/0.38–0.40; posterior pronotal maximal width (straight): 0.84–0.86/0.88–0.90; anterior scutellar width: 0.60–0.65/0.61–0.62; mesial scutellar length: 0.52–0.54/0.50–0.51; commissure length: 0.69–0.71/0.65–0.66; maximal width across hemelytron: 0.49–0.52/0.58–0.58.

Plant associations. Mallotus barbatus (Euphorbiaceae).

Distribution. Vietnam (Central).

Etymology. Named after the photographer, Mr. Paul Hopkins who accompanied the first author during the field trip and suggested the collecting site; a noun in the genitive case.

Discussion. This new species, Zanchius hopkinsi sp. nov. can be readily distinguished from a majority of other Zanchius species by the presence of dark spots and annulations on the antennae and conspicuous greenish spots on dorsum. It can easily be separated from both Z. nakatanii Yasunaga, 1999 from Japan and the recently described Z. tuehang Kim et al., 2025 from Vietnam by having only dark spots and annulations on the antennae (vs. antennae tinged with reddish and with dark annulations) and by possessing large greenish spots on the hemelytra (vs. hemelytra with more than 20 small greenish spots).

This new species is relatively close to Z. marmoratus Zou, 1987, due to similarities in antennae annulation patterns and the size and position of the greenish spots on the hemelytra, but can be clearly distinguished by the following characters: The dark spot on the lateral side of the first antennal segment postocular region, shorter of the segment and not connected with the apical spot (vs. lateral dark stripe on the first antennal segment continuous along its entire length); the short postocular region, being shorter than the maximal diameter of the first antennal segment (vs. postocular region longer than the maximal diameter of the first antennal segment); the rod-shaped and nearly straight right paramere (vs. the curved right paramere, with a small projection on the subbasal part of the hypophysis); and the endosoma bearing one spicule and three distinctly broad sclerites (vs. endosoma with two distinct curved spicules).

Zanchius hopkinsi sp. nov. is also similar in external appearance and male genitalia to Z. alatanus Hoberlandt, 1956 from Turkey, but can be distinguished by antennae with only dark annulations (vs. antennae with five reddish rings) and by the straight right paramere (vs. curved right paramere) (see p. 69–70 for the description and the key, and fig. 43a–e in Linnavuori (1994)).
