Description
This paper explores the implications of vote buying for Nigeria’s
democratic governance, focusing on its impact on electoral integrity,
political stability, and governance systems. The background of the study
stems from Nigeria’s ongoing struggle with electoral malpractice,
particularly vote-buying, which corrupts democratic processes and
erodes public trust. The research aims to evaluate the causes,
consequences, and possible reforms to combat vote buying. It uses a
qualitative approach, analyzing existing literature, reports from
election oversight agencies, and case studies from recent Nigeria. The
study examines socio-economic factors that sustain vote buying, such as
poverty, unemployment, and political patronage, while analyzing the
tactics, patterns, and key players involved. Results reveal that vote
buying is primarily driven by economic hardship and deep-rooted
political practices. It undermines voter independence, encourages
corruption, and weakens the legitimacy of elected officials. Although
reforms implemented by agencies like the Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC) have made progress, enforcement issues
and societal acceptance of vote buying remain significant challenges.
The paper recommends strengthening legal frameworks, improving
civic education, adopting technology in elections, and implementing
socio-economic reforms to reduce vote buying. Addressing these issues is essential for restoring electoral integrity and ensuring Nigeria’s
democracy accurately reflects the will of its people
