Atlas of Martian Geography: MC-8

Authors/Creators

Description

The Amazonis quadrangle (MC-8) encompasses one of the most dramatic topographic transitions on Mars, bridging the vast, flat northern plains with the colossal volcanic constructs of the Tharsis region. Dominated centrally by Amazonis Planitia—a smooth, lava-flooded lowland plain lying at elevations of –3 to –4 km—the map area records extensive volcanic, hydrologic, and tectonic histories spanning from the Hesperian to Amazonian periods. The northeastern and east-central sectors feature the western flank and aureole deposits of Olympus Mons (primarily in adjacent MC-9), creating one of the solar system's steepest relief gradients: over 25,000 meters from the volcano's summit to the adjacent plains. These aureole lobes, including the prominent Lycus Sulci ridge systems, extend westward up to 750 km and lie 1–3 km below datum, formed by massive landslides or glacial-like flows from the volcano's flanks. Southward, near the highland-lowland dichotomy boundary, prominent linear features such as Gordii and Eumenides Dorsa rise as mesas, while the debouchment of Mangala Valles (from MC-16) marks ancient outflow channels. The southwestern quadrant transitions to knobby terrain separating the northern plains from cratered highlands, with Marte Vallis providing a shallow conduit linking to Elysium Planitia (MC-15). This region exemplifies late-stage volcanic resurfacing, episodic flooding, and aeolian modification, with minimal impact cratering in the youngest plains units. The chart revives classical albedo nomenclature (e.g., from Schiaparelli and Lowell eras) alongside modern areographic designations, integrating MOLA topography, THEMIS infrared imagery, and geologic overlays to bridge telescopic geography with contemporary exploration data—facilitating analysis for future settlement, resource utilization, and scientific missions in this dynamically reshaped lowland-volcanic interface.
