Arquitetura moderna em Campinas: a questão estrutural

Resumo: O trabalho apresenta os resultados de uma investigação que desvenda a singularidade na elaboração do projeto de Oscar Niemeyer para o Edifício Itatiaia em Campinas inserindo-o na história da arquitetura moderna brasileira. Concluído o estudo preliminar do edifício, Oscar Niemeyer impôs o nome do calculista Werner Müller para desenvolver o projeto estrutural, trabalho este realizado no ano de 1952 e que permitiu o recurso da laje de transição no primeiro andar, tão cara aos modernos. A estrutura do Edifício Itatiaia, que recorre a lajes tipo caixão-perdido em todos os 15 pavimentos e é única em Campinas explica a imposição por parte de Niemeyer de um calculista de seu círculo profissional. A pesquisa, pautada na análise dos projetos estruturais dos edifícios habitacionais verticais construídos em Campinas nas décadas de 1950 e 1960, até então identificados como veiculadores de uma linguagem moderna, revelou o caráter singular do Ed ifício Itatiaia, pois desvenda como se procedia ao cálculo estrutural dos que, embora mantendo a solução estrutural antiga, fizeram recurso à linguagem do movimento moderno. Os resultados das pesquisas permitiram ações no campo da preservação do patrimônio arquitetônico moderno e subsidiará a formulação do memorial justificativo para o pedido de tombamento do Edifício Itatiaia junto ao CONDEPACC- Conselho Municipal de Defesa do Patrimônio de Campinas.

Abstract: The work presents the results of an investigation that unveils the singularity in the preparation of the project of Oscar Niemeyer to the Itatiaia Building in Campinas inserting it in the history of Brazilian modern architecture. After preliminary study of the building, Oscar Niemeyer asked for the engineer Werner Müller for developing the structural design. This work was completed in the year 1952 allowing the use of stone into the first floor, so used to modern. The structure of the Itatiaia Building, which uses a slab-type lost casket in all 15 floors and is unique in Campinas justifying Niemeyer imposition for a structural engineer of his professional circle. The research, based on analysis of structural designs of verticals buildings for housing constructed in Campinas in the 1950s and 1960s, identified as a vehicle for a modern language, revealed the unique character of the Itatiaia Building. It shows that, while others buildings of the same period maintained the old structural solution as a recourse for using the language of the modern movement, the Itatiaia Building was unique to adopt the original modern solution in terms of structural project. The results of research led actions in the field of preservation of modern architectural heritage and subsidize the formulation of the memorial for justifying the request for preserving the Itatiaia Building by the city council for the defense of the heritage of Campinas – CONDEPACC - Conselho Municipal de Defesa do Patrimônio de Campinas.
