Mental Health Services Utilization Among Urban Youth in Lagos, Nigeria: Satisfaction and Impact Assessments Over Six Months

Urban youth in Lagos face unique challenges related to mental health services utilization, necessitating a deeper understanding of their experiences and satisfaction levels. A qualitative research approach was employed, involving semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of 30 urban youths aged between 15 to 24 years in Lagos, Nigeria. Data collection utilised thematic analysis for data synthesis. Findings indicate that while 70% of participants found the services accessible and effective, themes emerged around the need for more culturally sensitive interventions and improved referral pathways from primary care settings. Urban youth in Lagos report generally positive experiences with mental health support services, highlighting a critical area for service improvement to better meet their needs. Recommendation includes expanding cultural sensitivity training for providers and enhancing referral systems between primary healthcare and specialized mental health services.
