#04 The Sustainability Education Gap: Why Knowledge Fails to Reach Operations in Tourism and Hospitality

Description

This report examines the structural gap between sustainability knowledge and its implementation in tourism and hospitality operations. Despite the growth of sustainability frameworks, certifications, and reporting standards, operational adoption across the sector remains limited.
The analysis shows that sustainability education is fragmented across academic programmes, professional training, certification systems, corporate initiatives, and development-sector training, with little coordination between them. As a result, the actors most responsible for daily sustainability outcomes (frontline hospitality staff, operational managers, and local communities) rarely receive practical sustainability education suited to operational contexts.
The report identifies the education gap as a structural barrier to tourism’s sustainability transition and proposes design principles for learning systems capable of translating sustainability knowledge into operational practice.
