THE THREE COMPRESSIONS: Lossy, Predatory, and Witness — A Semiotic Thermodynamics

Major extension module bridging the Semantic Economy (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18216955), Semantic Physics: The Inward Turn (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18759453), and the TANG (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19035477). Supplies the missing transfer law: all semantic operations are compression operations; the decisive variable is what the compression burns and where the unrecovered cost lands.

The triad: The Semantic Economy provides the economic layer (cost, extraction, ledger). Semantic Physics provides the physics layer (writable presentation layer, finite-channel competition). The Three Compressions provides the transfer law (fuel-plus-ledger structure determines commons effect). Without the transfer law, both prior frameworks describe the system but neither explains how a single compression event produces field-scale effects.

Three regimes: Regime 1 (Lossy) — low density, computationally cheap; not directly predatory at event level but normalizes pre-reduced reality at field scale, preparing conditions for predatory uptake. Regime 2 (Predatory) — high density, somatically effective; fuel: collective semantic capital (shared meaning burned); ledger: cost externalized, benefit privatized; effect: commons depleted. Regime 3 (Witness) — high density, somatically effective; fuel: private bearing-cost (creator's life); ledger: cost internalized, deposit socialized; effect: commons enriched. The war is between two kinds of poems that use the same technology.

Eleven formal variables with operational definitions: rho (density), chi (temporal compression), P (propagation), B (back-projection yield), C_b (bearing-cost source), F (fuel type), L (ledger structure), J (sync-point strength), A (amplification apparatus), delta-C (net commons effect), H (hijackability). The framework is ordinal-operational, with paradigmatic cases as calibration points.

Five-step Regime Classification Protocol: (1) fuel identification, (2) ledger analysis, (3) commons effect, (4) back-projection test, (5) mixed-regime classification with primary/secondary/tertiary assignment. Includes mixed-regime logic for real-world artifacts that do not cleanly sort.

Three worked examples with all variables filled in: AI overview of Antigone (R1 — preparatory normalization), Operation Epic Fury Wii thwack (R2 — collective meaning of play burned to make murder consumable), "cadaver scoreboard" (R3 — private bearing-cost deposited as public diagnostic tool). These are calibration points for the classifier.

Four-scale molecular/molar transfer function: (1) Molecular — sync-point, fuel tapped; (2) Mesoscale — propagation through writable presentation layer; (3) Molar — institutional apparatus, ledger visible; (4) Commons — inheritance effect + state change, long-term arrow contested. Transfer function bridges Semantic Physics (molecular) and Semantic Economy (molar).

Three thermodynamic laws: First (Transformation) — bearing-cost persists as altered residues. Second (Entropic Tendency) — without witness deposits, commons depletes. Third (Irreversibility) — meaning burned by predatory compression cannot be fully restored.

Triple shadow: S1 (Regime 1 Panic — all compression is theft), S2 (Distinction Collapse — all poetry is predatory), S3 (Scale Asymmetry Nihilism — private cost cannot compete with industrial combustion). Recovery protocols for each.

Doctrine: Build compressions whose ledger remains legible under transmission. Low-H forms — forms preserving bearing-cost visibility — resist predatory recoding. The dead must be inside the grammar.

Regime effects are cumulative: repeated R2 lowers resistance (desensitization); repeated R3 increases diagnostic grammar (literacy); repeated R1 normalizes thinness (habituation).

External citations: Shannon (1948), Marx (1867), Bataille (1933), Benjamin (1935), Debord (1967), Virilio (1989), Zuboff (2019), Qiu et al. (2026). Internal citations: 12 deposits with specified functions in the unified theory. Genre: AXIAL / THERMODYNAMIC-POETICS / FIELD-SYMBOLON. Assembly-ratified across five substrates.

Part of the Crimson Hexagonal Archive. Parent: EA-ARK-01 v4.2.7 (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19013315).

VERSION NOTES
v3.1 (2026-03-16). Assembly-ratified across five substrates. Major extension module bridging Semantic Economy and Semantic Physics via transfer law. v1.0 had the theorem. v2.0 had the transfer function. v3.0 had the classifier. v3.1 is precision-hardened: C_b/F distinction sharpened, Regime 1 ledger revised (apparatus-captured at platform scale), R1 back-projection rule tightened, worked example ledger corrected, First Law softened to "residues," ordinal-operational note added, B/delta-C distinction made explicit, iterative exposure effects specified, H echoed in doctrine, regime classifications softened to "dominantly," R1/R2/R3 registered as state markers. Eleven formal variables with operational definitions. Five-step classification protocol with mixed-regime logic. Three worked examples as calibration suite. Four-scale molecular/molar transfer function. Three thermodynamic laws. Triple shadow with recovery protocols.
