The Human Side of Lab Leadership
Description
Research laboratories are complex social environments in which scientific discovery depends not only on technical expertise but also on effective leadership, mentorship, communication, and team functioning. Despite this reality, most scientists receive little formal training in managing people or leading teams. As a result, principal investigators and research leaders often develop leadership practices through trial and error.
This toolkit synthesizes insights from organizational behavior, leadership science, and team research and adapts them to the unique structure of academic research laboratories. It provides a practical framework for intentional research leadership, emphasizing hiring and team composition, psychological safety and lab culture, communication and conflict navigation, mentorship and professional development, and integrity and accountability.
In addition to conceptual models, the toolkit includes practical tools that research leaders can implement within their laboratories, including structured interview questions, team charter templates, conflict navigation guides, performance improvement plan templates, and a performance diagnosis decision tree.
The goal of this resource is not to prescribe a single model of leadership, but to provide practical tools that help research leaders build thoughtful, intentional approaches to managing teams and supporting the people who make scientific discovery possible.
This resource is intended for principal investigators, research directors, postdoctoral scholars preparing for leadership roles, and research teams seeking to strengthen communication, culture, and collaborations.
