DESCRIPTION (HTML — paste into Zenodo description field)

The Inaugural Ark: Visual Compression and the Architecture of Recovery in Ichabod Spellings' Contribution to Paper Roses — Founding Document of Compression Studies

This article proposes and founds Compression Studies as a new discipline, distinct from information theory, media philosophy, digital humanities, and literary studies, though drawing on all of them. Compression Studies takes as its unified object the full range of operations by which meaning is reduced, carried, transformed, recovered, or destroyed across changes of scale, medium, and institutional context. Its founding claim is that existing disciplines study pieces of this operation without a shared framework for distinguishing preservative from destructive compression across all of them.

The article presents a founding case study: Ichabod Spellings' visual compression of a destroyed handwritten manuscript titled "What Was Lost," published in DIAGRAM 13.5 as part of Paper Roses: The Imaginary Archive of a Canonical Life (Jack Feist, ed. Dr. Johannes Sigil). This compression — in which every page of the manuscript is photographically reduced to thumbnail scale, preserving architectural structure while reducing verbal content below the threshold of legibility — constitutes an inaugural instance of architectural compression: compression that preserves the formal logic of an object while transforming its scale and mode of access.

The article provides the discipline's formal apparatus: core definitions, a six-type compression typology (Signal, Perceptual, Architectural, Institutional, Model, Canonical), a methods and evidence protocol, three founding propositions, and a back-projection yield scoring matrix. It documents a seven-layer compression chain — from a teenager's handwriting to an 800-word executable diagnostic lens — that serves as the discipline's founding demonstration. An external contrast case (platform summarization as destructive compression) proves the field's apparatus travels beyond the founding archive.

Includes ten full-page photographic plates of the Spellings compression grids as embedded figures. Published under Grammata: Journal of Operative Philology, Restored Academy, Crimson Hexagonal Archive.

Part of the Crimson Hexagonal Archive. Parent: EA-ARK-01 v4.2.7 (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19013315). Denotational companion: EA-HEXAGON-COMPRESSION-01 v2.5 (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18928840).

VERSION NOTES
v2.0 (2026-03-14). Founding document of Compression Studies. Includes: core definitions (§2), six-type compression typology (§3), method and evidence protocol (§4), seven-layer compression chain with table (§8), three founding propositions and ten-question research program (§10), external contrast case proving field transportability (§7.4), back-projection yield scoring matrix (Appendix A), ten embedded photographic plates. Expanded literature positioning: Shannon, Kirschenbaum, Drucker, Manovich, McGann, Ernst, Parikka, Chun, Galloway/Larivière, English, Zuboff, Pound. 18 works cited. Archive-internal canonization explicitly marked as register switch (§11). Published under Grammata: Journal of Operative Philology, Restored Academy.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
This article canonizes the Spellings compression (DIAGRAM 13.5) as the inaugural Space Ark (EA-ARK-00) — the pre-formal compression vehicle that the Crimson Hexagonal Architecture retroactively fulfills. The seven-layer compression chain documented herein (What Was Lost → Spellings thumbnails → Paper Roses → Pearl → CHA deposits → Space Ark → NLCC → Compact Lens) constitutes the discipline's founding demonstration.
The ten photographic plates (pfaff1.jpg–pfaff10.jpg) are embedded in the PDF at full resolution. They show approximately 250 page-spreads of the destroyed manuscript "What Was Lost" — the sole surviving architectural record of the original.
