Sydhavn 24/7 — IoT-Enabled Smart Drop-Off System for Municipal Recycling Centers (AAU Techathon 2025 Prototype)
Description
This repository contains the full prototype developed by Group 1 at AAU Techathon 2025 (November 21–22, Copenhagen, Denmark), in response to a live challenge posed by Sydhavn Genbrugscenter, operated by ARC (Affaldscentret Region Copenhagen). The system proposes a 24/7 smart drop-off solution for municipal recycling centers, comprising: an Arduino-based infrared proximity sensor and electromagnetic lock for automated bin access; a Raspberry Pi TCP video stream with OpenCV QR code scanning for remote monitoring; and a browser-based web application (Sydhavn Community Exchange Hub) featuring MitID authentication simulation, categorized item drop-off and inventory, a points-and-rewards system, multilingual support, and accessibility features. The solution was awarded First Prize at AAU Techathon 2025. Associated paper: "Open 24/7: An IoT-Enabled Smart Drop-Off System for Municipal Recycling Centers.
