Accessibility and Affordability: Open Source Solutions for Rural Library Management
Description
Rural libraries frequently struggle to provide the same quality of service as their metropolitan counterparts due to issues with tight finances, remote locations, and outdated technology. This chapter is about how open source software (OSS) could enhance access and reduces costs for managing rural libraries. Compared to proprietary software, open source solutions are more versatile and affordable, allowing libraries to adapt tools to their own requirements without having to pay hefty fees. In order to increase user engagement, boost operational efficiency, and improve library services in remote areas, this study looks at the potential of open source solutions. Our goal is to encourage a wider acceptance of these technologies and bridge the digital divide that rural libraries encounter by examining the advantages and difficulties of using OSS in these settings. In the end, the study outlines policy recommendations and future initiatives to facilitate the integration of open source technologies, thereby improving rural communities' educational and cultural environments.
