Blended learning: information technology as a teaching tool for 1-2-year-olds by Neharika Verma
Description
This literature review examines the use of information technology (IT) as a teaching tool for children aged 1–2 years in early childhood education (ECE) settings. Drawing on a range of academic studies and New Zealand curriculum frameworks, including Te Whāriki, this review explores four key themes: the positive effects of IT in early childhood, the negative effects of excessive technology use, the role of IT in teaching and learning environments, and the varying perspectives of teachers and parents on digital technology in ECE.
The review finds that the impact of IT on young children is strongly influenced by the pedagogical approaches, understanding, and interactions of teachers and parents with digital tools. While research highlights benefits such as improved literacy, language development, and school readiness, concerns around screen addiction, developmental delays, and behavioral problems are also identified. The review concludes by connecting these findings to socio-cultural theories by Vygotsky and Bronfenbrenner, emphasising that children’s learning through technology is shaped by their relationships with the adults around them.
This review is conducted as part of an action research project aimed at reflecting on and improving current IT practices in an early childhood centre in New Zealand.
