The empowerment of the African American Youth through the portrayal of Miles Morales as Spider-Man
Authors/Creators
Description
This study examines how the portrayal of Miles Morales in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Across the Spider-Verse (2023) influences identity empowerment among African American youth. As an Afro-Latino Spider-Man, Morales challenges decades of predominantly white representation in the franchise and offers a culturally resonant alternative for young audiences. Using qualitative analysis, the research draws on academic literature, media reviews, public reactions, and key film scenes to explore themes of identity, discrimination, and belonging. It also considers his connection to contemporary social movements and his broader impact on representation, self-perception, and youth empowerment.
