Mining Sector Environmental Governance and Compliance in Zambia: A Methodological Framework

The mining sector plays a critical role in Zambia's economy, contributing significantly to employment and foreign exchange earnings. However, environmental degradation caused by mining operations has led to widespread public concern and regulatory scrutiny. The methodology involves conducting interviews with key stakeholders including government officials, civil society organizations, and community members. Data is collected using a structured questionnaire designed to evaluate the effectiveness of existing environmental regulations and enforcement practices. Interviews revealed that while there are established legal frameworks in place, compliance rates remain low, particularly regarding water pollution control measures. This suggests a need for more robust monitoring and enforcement mechanisms. The methodological framework developed provides insights into the challenges faced by regulators and stakeholders in ensuring environmental standards are met within the mining sector of Zambia. Recommendations include strengthening collaboration between regulatory bodies, enhancing public participation in decision-making processes, and improving training for local communities on environmental protection measures.
