Description
Restoring the Goddess is an Honors Program Capstone thesis submitted to Orange County Community College (SUNY Orange) in 2012, examining the historical suppression and survival of the divine feminine across the Abrahamic religious traditions. Drawing on archaeology, biblical scholarship, evolutionary biology, and feminist theology, the thesis traces the worship of Asherah as consort of Yahweh in ancient Israelite religion, documents the systematic erasure of goddess traditions through successive waves of religious reform, and examines the survival of feminine divine imagery in Catholic Marian devotion, folk tradition, and early Christian texts. The thesis argues that the subordination of women in Abrahamic religious contexts is inseparable from the theological erasure of the feminine divine, and that recovering this hidden history is essential to understanding both the origins of religious patriarchy and the ongoing spiritual wound it produces in women practitioners.
This work represents an early stage of research subsequently developed and expanded in the popular revised edition, If God Loves Me, Why Does Church Make Me Feel Wrong? (The Forgotten Mother) (2025–2026); available via Amazon Kindle and Apple Books.
