The Current State of Private Sector Economic Development in Vietnam in the Era of Digital Transformation

This study delves into the transformative potential of Vietnam’s private sector amidst the dynamic landscape of digitalization, a cornerstone for sustainable economic advancement. As a vital contributor to GDP and employment, the private sector, predominantly SMEs confronts formidable barriers, including global economic volatility, digital skill deficiencies, and infrastructural limitations, which curtail its digital transformation prospects. Employing a robust mixed-methods framework, this research integrates quantitative data from Vietnam Briefing and the General Statistics Office with qualitative insights from Resolution No. 68-NQ/TW to analyze trends and challenges from 2020–2025. This comprehensive approach provides a nuanced understanding of the current state of digital adoption within Vietnamese enterprises. Findings from the study underscore digital transformation's immense capacity to amplify efficiency, bolster competitiveness, and unlock new market opportunities. However, the research also highlights that SMEs face disproportionate constraints, including limited access to capital for technology investment and a significant gap in digital literacy among employees and leadership. The study advocates targeted policy interventions, including digital adoption incentives and capacity-building initiatives, to foster resilient, inclusive, and sustainable growth. These measures are crucial not only for empowering the private sector but also for accelerating Vietnam’s national digital economic goals and ensuring its continued progress in the global economy. By addressing these challenges head-on, Vietnam can unlock the full potential of its private sector as a powerful engine for future prosperity.
