Operationalising Safe and Sustainable by Design for Industry: Mapping, Coordinating, and Structuring Chemical and Material Innovation with the PLANETS Workflow
Authors/Creators
Description
Co-developed by a multidisciplinary team through iterative cycles, the workflow addresses issues such as structuring the scoping phase, defining tiered assessments, integrating planning activities, and harmonising terminology. The workflow contains two main phases—scoping and assessment—supported by an educational kit. The assessment phase includes simplified, intermediate, and full tiers, enabling progressive and adaptable evaluation.
The scoping phase clarifies objectives, boundaries, and resource needs early on, highly instructive for planning the tiered assessment in greater detail. The simplified assessment highlights challenges in distinguishing alternatives due to uncertainty and limited differentiation, while rigid criteria occasionally excluded promising options, indicating the need for flexibility. The process must also accommodate varying numbers of alternatives, potentially clustering similar ones for practicality. SSbD ambassadors facilitated coordination, stakeholder engagement, and integration of safety and sustainability, supported by training and onboarding workshops.
Overall, the workflow provides a structured and practical guide for SSbD implementation. Early application shows strong potential, with further refinements planned through user feedback, expanded datasets, and broader industrial implementation.
